The field of global affairs examines interactions and relationships between countries, organizations and non-state actors on a worldwide scale. This includes diplomacy, trade, security and human rights. Global affairs studies also consider how the emergence of new nations has influenced the international system through engagement with one another and sometimes conflict with more established powers. Global affairs became more significant in the wake of decolonization, when newly independent states sought to establish their roles on the world stage. This has resulted in a host of issues such as regional instability, power struggles and economic development.
Global Affairs graduates are equipped with the skills needed to navigate complexity, lead with purpose and create positive change in a rapidly changing world. Through interdisciplinary coursework, you’ll become fluent in the approaches and frameworks of disciplines like political science, sociology, history and economics. Then you’ll choose a thematic or geographical concentration to focus your learning and advance your career.
Study Abroad
Students are encouraged to complete a semester or summer term abroad. Up to two courses taken abroad may, with DUS approval, count toward the major requirements.
Expand your education through the Master of Arts in Global Affairs. This career-connected degree program offers the opportunity to combine your undergraduate degree with advanced training to become a global policymaker in government, nonprofit or the private sector. Through a capstone project, you will join a small group of students to apply your academic training in the form of an advisory task force to a real-world problem. This gives you the experience to make an immediate impact in a fast-evolving field like sustainability, international policy and energy security, global governance or humanitarian aid.
